Clustering Studies with the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey

چکیده
The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey has now been completed and has mapped the three-dimensional distribution, and hence clustering, of galaxies in exquisite detail over an unprecedentedly large (∼ 108 h−3 Mpc3) volume of the local Universe. Here we highlight some of the major results to come from studies of clustering within the survey: galaxy correlation function and power spectrum analyses and the constraints they have placed on cosmological parameters; the luminosity functions of rich galaxy clusters, their dependence on global cluster properties and galaxy type, and how they compare with the field; and the variation of galactic star formation activity with environment, both within clusters and in galaxy groups.

The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey as a Cosmological Laboratory
The 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) of 230,000 redshifts of nearby (z ∼ 0.1) galaxies is now complete. It has allowed the 2dFGRS team and others to estimate fundamental cosmological parameters and to study galaxy intrinsic properties. Here we highlight three recent key results from the survey: (i) an upper limit of about 2eV on the total mass of the three neutrino flavours, and an intriguin...
متن کاملCosmological constraints from galaxy clustering
In this manuscript I review the mathematics and physics that underpins recent work using the clustering of galaxies to derive cosmological model constraints. I start by describing the basic concepts, and gradually move on to some of the complexities involved in analysing galaxy redshift surveys, focusing on the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey (2dFGRS) and the Sloan Digital Sky survey (SDSS). Difficu...
متن کاملNo Periodicities in 2dF Redshift Survey Data
We have used the publicly available data from the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey and the 2dF QSO Redshift Survey to test the hypothesis that there is a periodicity in the redshift distribution of quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) found projected close to foreground galaxies. These data provide by far the largest and most homogeneous sample for such a study, yielding 1647 QSO–galaxy pairs. There is no ev...
متن کاملCalibrating the Galaxy Halo – Black Hole Relation Based on the Clustering of Quasars
The observed number counts of quasars may be explained either by long-lived activity within rare massive hosts, or by short-lived activity within smaller, more common hosts. It has been argued that quasar lifetimes may therefore be inferred from their clustering length, which determines the typical mass of the quasar host. Here we point out that the relationship between the mass of the black-ho...
متن کاملUsing the 2dF galaxy redshift survey to detect gravitationally-lensed quasars
Galaxy redshift surveys can be used to detect gravitationally-lensed quasars if the spectra obtained are searched for the quasars’ emission lines. Previous investigations of this possibility have used simple models to show that the 2 degree Field (2dF) redshift survey could yield several tens of new lenses, and that the larger Sloan Digital Sky Survey should contain an order of magnitude more. ...
